3 Tips for Managing Stress

Share

While small amounts of stress are often unavoidable, constant and chronic stress can take a toll on people.

According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can have a devastating effect on your body, including causing headaches, stomach issues, fatigue, chest pain, and more. If it’s not kept in check, it can even lead to problems such as obesity and heart disease.

Stress hormones like cortisol can even lead to strokes when individuals don’t have other risk factors like a sedentary lifestyle or high blood pressure.

Because of this, it’s essential to take steps to manage stress levels. Keep on reading to discover our top three tips for managing stress.

Tips for Managing Stress

1. Deep Breathing

Anxiety and stress result in an individual’s breathing becoming more constrained.

This shallow breathing results in increased heart rate and blood pressure and has a negative impact on the body. Deep breathing is a great way of managing stress since calm and measured breathing calms down your body. Deep breathing is often used by those suffering from panic attacks to calm themselves down.

One popular breathing technique is the 4-7-8 technique. To practice, breathe in for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. This pattern is repeated until eventually allows the individual to calm their body down.

Inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth to take full advantage of this breathing technique.

2. Regular Exercise

Exercise is a long-term stress management technique that can significantly improve your health. In addition to being great for both your body and brain, physical activity also helps to improve stress and calm you down.

Engage in 150 minutes of movement every week and see the marked change it makes to your life. It should also be noted that exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous – even something as easy as walking for about 20 minutes every day can be helpful when it comes to managing stress.

3. Massage Therapy

Massage is another route to stress relief. In fact, massage therapy is helpful for various conditions, including insomnia, headaches, lower back pain, arthritis, and more.

Receiving regular massages can help promote relaxation, reduce pain, and boost an individual’s mood. Managing stress through massage has been popular for decades, but today, an increasing number of people are realizing the importance of self-care.

The most popular and effective types of massage therapy for stress management include Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, and therapeutic massage.

By focusing on the deeper layers of soft tissues and both spreading and stretching muscle tissue, massage therapists can help patients manage stress, increase movement, and see a significant reduction in pain.
